Breakfast at the Hotel
Start your day with an early breakfast at your hotel before setting off on a full-day exploration of Eastern Crete.
Optional Excursion: Spinalonga Island, Agios Nikolaos & Olive Farm Tasting Experience
Your day begins along the stunning northeastern coast of Crete, heading toward the historic island of Spinalonga, located in the Gulf of Elounda. This small rocky islet is crowned by one of the most impressive Venetian fortresses, built in 1579 to protect the ancient ports of Olous and the Bay of Elounda. Following the Ottoman conquest, Spinalonga became a refuge for Christian families and, from 1912 to 1958, served as a leper colony—earning the poignant nickname “the Island of Tears.”
Today, Spinalonga stands as an open-air museum. During your guided visit, you will walk through narrow streets lined with former homes and shops, hear powerful stories of resilience and humanity, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the Gulf of Mirabello from the fortress ramparts.
The excursion continues with an authentic immersion into Cretan rural traditions at a typical olive farm, a peaceful haven of nature, craftsmanship, and local culture. Here, you will visit a 140-year-old olive press and learn about olive harvesting, traditional olive oil production, and the secrets of the world-renowned Cretan diet. The guided tour leads you through various thematic workshops dedicated to Cretan herbs, aloe vera, sun-dried tomatoes, raki distillation, carob trees, beekeeping, viticultural heritage, traditional cheese-making, and much more.
You will also explore an aromatic garden featuring over 60 medicinal plants, a pottery workshop, and observe the farm’s free-roaming animals. The visit concludes with a generous tasting of more than 30 homemade Cretan products, including premium olive oils, local specialties, and traditional delicacies prepared with passion and authenticity.
The final stop of the day is Agios Nikolaos, the elegant capital of the Lassithi region, nestled along the tranquil Gulf of Mirabello. This charming coastal town invites you to stroll along its seafront promenade, browse its lively shopping streets, or relax at a café overlooking the legendary Lake Voulismeni—said to be bottomless and once explored by Jacques Cousteau. As you wander through the promenade and picturesque alleys, you will also notice the striking modern Minotaur mural overlooking the shimmering bay.
Blending stylish boutiques, small harbors, and a relaxed atmosphere, Agios Nikolaos perfectly captures the essence of the Cretan way of life.
A full-day experience combining history, gastronomy, tradition, and coastal beauty—the very essence of Eastern Crete.
