Optional Excursion: Knossos Palace & Heraklion Old Town Walking Tour
Set out on a guided tour exploring the very dawn of European civilization, following in the footsteps of the Minoans in their homeland, Crete. The rise of this remarkable civilization dates back to the 3rd millennium BC and, over the course of two millennia, it bequeathed to humanity an extraordinarily rich artistic and cultural heritage.

The powerful Minoan kingdom was structured around its impressive palaces, the largest and most magnificent of which was the Palace of Knossos. Deeply intertwined with the legendary myths of the Minotaur imprisoned in the Labyrinth and Ariadne’s thread, Knossos stands as the capital of the Minoan civilization and represents the first advanced civilization in Europe—one of the most sophisticated societies of the ancient world.

Lavishly adorned with vivid frescoes, this vast palatial complex covers approximately 20,000 square meters and includes more than 1,500 rooms, forming a true labyrinth that blends mythological fascination with historical significance. Its exceptional artistry and finely crafted pottery continue to inspire awe today. Visitors will explore highlights such as the Grand Staircase, the Throne Room, and admire the vibrant frescoes revealed at this legendary Minoan archaeological site.

Following the visit to Knossos, continue to Heraklion, the lively and cosmopolitan port capital of Crete. The city is home to the tomb of Níkos Kazantzákis, the celebrated author of Zorba the Greek, and is rich in charm, history, and cultural treasures. The Koules Venetian Fortress, elegant mansions, Byzantine churches, and Ottoman fountains provide countless photo opportunities.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the seafront or through the pedestrian-friendly historic center, where you can find the perfect café to savor a Greek coffee, fresh juice, or refreshing drink. Shopping enthusiasts will appreciate Daedalou Street with its designer boutiques, while 1866 Street is known for its vibrant local shops and original souvenir stores.

Optional Experience: Visit to a Local Cretan Agritourism Estate – Cooking Class & Wine Tasting
The experience begins with a guided tour of the estate’s facilities, including a beautifully curated corridor displaying photographs from the family archives, as well as several exhibition areas: a traditional grocery shop, a veranda, fruit and vegetable sorting and packaging areas, a vineyard, an olive oil and raisin processing unit, and a peaceful olive grove.

The journey continues to the traditional metochi (country house), where—alongside Grandmother Maria and her granddaughter Marianna—you will take part in preparing authentic Cretan recipes. Together, you will make handmade village bread and barley biscuits baked in a traditional wood-fired oven. Depending on the day, you may also prepare sarikopites (crispy cheese pastries) or hortopites (wild herb pies), following time-honored local techniques.

After the cooking workshop, return to the main hall for a guided olive oil tasting, featuring three premium labels: organic extra virgin olive oil, classic extra virgin olive oil, and PDO Archanes olive oil, along with a defective sample for educational comparison. The tasting is followed by a full homemade Cretan meal, served on the veranda overlooking the lush green vineyard, offering a truly immersive farm-to-table experience.

Naturally, the meal concludes with Grandmother Anna’s homemade desserts, the traditional “submarine” sweet flavored with mastiha, and a refreshing glass of chilled raki, the iconic Cretan spirit.

Before departure, take your time to browse the many hidden treasures of the estate’s traditional grocery shop, where local products and artisanal delicacies are available.

Optional Excursion: Spinalonga Island, Agios Nikolaos & Olive Farm Tasting Experience
Your day begins along the stunning northeastern coast of Crete, heading toward the historic island of Spinalonga, located in the Gulf of Elounda. This small rocky islet is crowned by one of the most impressive Venetian fortresses, built in 1579 to protect the ancient ports of Olous and the Bay of Elounda. Following the Ottoman conquest, Spinalonga became a refuge for Christian families and, from 1912 to 1958, served as a leper colony—earning the poignant nickname “the Island of Tears.”

Today, Spinalonga stands as an open-air museum. During your guided visit, you will walk through narrow streets lined with former homes and shops, hear powerful stories of resilience and humanity, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the Gulf of Mirabello from the fortress ramparts.

The excursion continues with an authentic immersion into Cretan rural traditions at a typical olive farm, a peaceful haven of nature, craftsmanship, and local culture. Here, you will visit a 140-year-old olive press and learn about olive harvesting, traditional olive oil production, and the secrets of the world-renowned Cretan diet. The guided tour leads you through various thematic workshops dedicated to Cretan herbs, aloe vera, sun-dried tomatoes, raki distillation, carob trees, beekeeping, viticultural heritage, traditional cheese-making, and much more.

You will also explore an aromatic garden featuring over 60 medicinal plants, a pottery workshop, and observe the farm’s free-roaming animals. The visit concludes with a generous tasting of more than 30 homemade Cretan products, including premium olive oils, local specialties, and traditional delicacies prepared with passion and authenticity.

The final stop of the day is Agios Nikolaos, the elegant capital of the Lassithi region, nestled along the tranquil Gulf of Mirabello. This charming coastal town invites you to stroll along its seafront promenade, browse its lively shopping streets, or relax at a café overlooking the legendary Lake Voulismeni—said to be bottomless and once explored by Jacques Cousteau. As you wander through the promenade and picturesque alleys, you will also notice the striking modern Minotaur mural overlooking the shimmering bay.

Blending stylish boutiques, small harbors, and a relaxed atmosphere, Agios Nikolaos perfectly captures the essence of the Cretan way of life.
